IMPERIAL – MOVIE-READY
History
The former Imperial Post Office and the Hotel zur Post are part of the listed Backbord Geesthacht area. The hotel opened its doors at the end of the 19th century, when Alfred Nobel invented dynamite here on the Elbe River. Between the harbor and St. Salvatoris Church, the inn was a favorite haunt of Elbe boatmen, and the beer garden was a popular destination for Hamburg residents. In the 1920s, rumba was danced to South American sounds in the ballroom, and the location quickly became a favorite for Geesthacht residents and the surrounding area when it came to celebrating. The guest book from the 1960s lists guests from Istanbul, Sao Paulo, and Himmelreich, and the hotel's handwritten cookbook contains recipes for "sausage dinner" and "lilac liqueur." Almost a "lost place," the hotel was discovered as a film location in the mid-2000s. Comedies like "Der Tatortreiniger" (The Crime Scene Cleaner) with Bjarne Mädel and the ARD cult series "Nord bei Nordwest" (North by Northwest) are filmed here. With "Backbord Geesthacht," the location is poised to open a new chapter in Geesthacht's Elbe hospitality. We look forward to seeing you.
